Anthropic confirmed on Saturday that Claude Fable 5 is becoming a permanent part of the Max and Team Premium plans, though it comes with a catch. Starting July 20, subscribers on those two tiers get the model built into their subscription, but capped at half their normal usage limits.
The news came straight from the official Claude account on X. Pro and Team Standard users still get Fable 5 only through usage credits, and as a bit of a consolation, everyone on those two tiers is getting a one time $100 credit added to their account.
The company was fairly upfront about why this took so long. Demand for the model has been all over the place since launch, and Anthropic said it kept pushing back the cutoff date for free access while it scrambled to line up more server capacity behind the scenes.
That's an understatement if anything. Fable 5 first launched on June 9 alongside its sibling model Mythos 5, then went dark just three days later when the US Commerce Department slapped export controls on both. Access only returned on July 1 once those restrictions were lifted, and Anthropic promised paid plans free inclusion up to a certain date. That date has moved three separate times, first from July 7 to July 12, then again to July 19. July 20 is where Anthropic finally drew a line, swapping another short extension for something that looks more permanent.
In a follow up post on the same thread, the company tried to explain itself. It said it wants to give subscribers "more certainty about what your plan includes," and that the 50% cap is going specifically to the plans that lean on Fable the hardest. Anthropic also said it's still adding capacity and will keep people posted.
Reaction on X has been mixed so far. Some users are happy to finally have Fable baked into Max without needing separate credits. Others aren't impressed, arguing that the constant back and forth over the past month has chipped away at trust in the plan, with a few pointing to open weight rivals like Kimi K3 and GLM 5.2 as the ones actually benefiting from the confusion.
If you're on Pro or Team Standard, it's worth checking your account after July 20 to make sure that $100 credit actually landed, since Anthropic hasn't said exactly when it'll show up.
