Elon Musk confirms 2T parameter Grok 4.6 model will finish initial training next week

Elon Musk just shared some interesting updates about SpaceXAI on his X account. The startup is already wrapping up the initial training phase for its next big artificial intelligence model, Grok 4.6, and it is set to happen next week.

This upcoming model is going to be a 2 trillion parameter system. That marks a solid step up from the recently released Grok 4.5, which runs on 1.5 trillion parameters.

The whole conversation kicked off when a tech follower named Min Choi shared a chart from Artificial Analysis. The data compared how much various AI models cost to run against how smart they actually are during tasks.

Looking at the chart, Grok 4.5 sits in a very strong position. It keeps running costs low while remaining incredibly fast compared to heavy hitters from OpenAI and Google. Musk noticed the post and jumped into the replies to back up the data. He wrote that Grok 4.5 is "arguably #1 when taking speed and cost into account" because of its efficiency.

But SpaceXAI is already trying to beat its own benchmarks with Grok 4.6. Musk claims the upcoming 2 trillion parameter model is "better than our 1.5T in every way" which means users can expect across the board improvements.

The main goal for this version seems to be taking on major rivals like Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model. Right now, Kimi K3 is a larger model at 2.8 trillion parameters, but it reportedly costs roughly three times more for every single task it runs.

Musk wants Grok 4.6 to beat Kimi in raw intelligence, but without losing the operational speed that made the current version popular. He noted that the new model might exceed Kimi, but it will do so with "speed and token efficiency close to our 1.5T".

Another interesting point came up in the replies under the post. A user named Michael Hinrichs suggested that xAI needs to stop relying so much on secondary sites like Wikipedia because they can introduce bias. Instead, he recommended using primary sources and real world data to build a better model.

Musk openly welcomed the feedback, replying, "I agree!".

When another user asked if this new 2 trillion model was going to be officially called Grok 4.6, Musk replied, "Yeah, Grok 4.6".

We do not know the exact public launch date for Grok 4.6 yet, but the training timeline is moving exceptionally fast. Since the initial training phase wraps up next week, it looks like SpaceXAI is pushing hard to stay ahead in the competitive AI race.
