Google rolled out three new Gemini models this week, and if you were hoping for a big smart flagship, you are going to be disappointed. What landed instead was Gemini 3.6 Flash, a smaller model called 3.5 Flash-Lite, and a security-focused one named 3.5 Flash Cyber that most people cannot even touch.
The star of the show is 3.6 Flash. Google says it is better at coding and reasoning while using fewer tokens, which basically means it does the same work for less money. On one benchmark, it used up to 65% fewer output tokens than the last version.
It is a real improvement, and the model itself was not a total surprise since a listing for it had already been spotted in Antigravity a day before the announcement.
But here is the thing people actually noticed. Gemini’s Pro model is still sitting at version 3.1. Google quietly mentioned that 3.5 Pro is “currently testing with partners” and will show up “as soon as it’s ready,” then went on to brag that it has already started the “most ambitious pre-training run yet” for Gemini 4.
So the top model is old, the next one is not out, and a future one is years away. The replies under Google’s own post said it better than any analyst could. “Your PRO model is still at v3.1,” one user wrote. Another put said: “Nobody wants Flash let alone Flash-Lite.”

That frustration makes sense. Flash and Flash-Lite are the budget options. They are fast and cheap and great for running lots of small tasks at scale, but they are not what you reach for when you want the smartest answer. Google clearly sees a business in cheap tokens for AI agents, and that is a fair bet. It is just not the bet a lot of paying users were asking it to make.
The third model, 3.5 Flash Cyber, is the odd one out. It finds and fixes security bugs in code, and Google is only handing it to governments and trusted partners for now. It is arguably the most interesting release of the three, and almost nobody gets to use it.
Of course, a cheaper and faster model is nice. But a new Pro would have been nicer...
