Comfy has refused to shut down its Open Source Higgsfield challenge after receiving a cease and desist letter from Higgsfield, the AI video platform. Comfy, the company behind the open source ComfyUI tool, said on X that the challenge stays open and that winners will be announced on November 6 with prizes paid as promised.

In its post, Comfy gave its own reading of why the letter was sent, saying that when the apps people pay for can be rebuilt in the open in two weeks, that is an uncomfortable thing for a closed platform to watch. Comfy said final submissions close on October 30.

The letter, dated October 28 and shared on X by Comfy's Yoland Yan, comes from the Associate General Counsel of Higgsfield Inc. It objects to the competition hosted at comfy.org/open-source-higgsfield, an October 15 post from Comfy on X, a campaign video featuring Higgsfield cofounder and CEO Alex Mashrabov, the hashtag #OpenSourceHiggsfield and build nights held in San Francisco on October 28 and in Los Angeles on October 29.

Higgsfield argues that the campaign uses the HIGGSFIELD name as the title of Comfy's own competition and features Mashrabov in a way that falsely suggests Higgsfield is behind it. The letter cites US Registration No. 8,134,642, Sections 32 and 43a of the Lanham Act and common law unfair competition.

It demands that Comfy stop using the mark, remove the campaign video, stop featuring Mashrabov in the campaign, preserve related documents for possible litigation and confirm in writing within two days. The letter also says Higgsfield does not object to open source software, to competition or to Comfy accurately naming Higgsfield.

Yan wrote that the claim of false association could not be farther from the truth, arguing that Higgsfield had promised to open source its product and never did. He said Comfy had made it clear that the challenge is organized by ComfyUI and not affiliated with or endorsed by Higgsfield.

According to the competition page, the challenge asks builders to recreate popular Higgsfield apps as open workflows with ComfyUI, with $25,000 in prizes including $10,000 for Best Overall. The page says the first 200 signups receive free credits and that winning entries will be featured on the Comfy Hub with credit.

No public response from Higgsfield to Comfy's posts could be found at the time of this writing.
