Elon Musk has a suggestion for Anthropic's new public benefit fund: skip the fund. Replying to Anthropic's announcement on X, Musk wrote, "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public."
Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a company it fully owns, and the board can add more as Anthropic's value grows. We explained how the fund works and what it could be worth earlier.
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit.

It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can…
A few hours later, Musk replied to his own comment with a bigger claim: "This is what I will be doing."
@AnthropicAI This is what I will be doing

He didn't explain what that means. Musk hasn't said whether he's talking about his own shares or one of his companies, how it would work, or when. His first reply alone has passed a million views on X.
The idea isn't far from what Anthropic itself floated. The company says the fund could make "direct distributions to specific populations," but the fund would decide who gets what. Musk's version would put shares straight into people's hands. Anthropic hasn't responded to him on X.
Musk isn't a neutral voice here. His AI business makes Grok, a direct rival to Claude, and in February he called Anthropic "misanthropic and evil". The relationship has since become more complicated. Anthropic now rents all of SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center, and SpaceX's IPO filing says Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion a month. So the man telling Anthropic how to share its wealth is also one of its biggest suppliers.
Anthropic says details on who runs the fund and how money gets handed out will come in the coming months. Until Musk explains his plan, "this is what I will be doing" is a promise without details.
